Getting back to health

Despite the sweet faces you see in these two pictures, I have to say, my little girls have been driving me INSANE this past week. Elsa goes into fussy mode after 5pm which requires lots of walking, lots of rocking and in the end nothing really working. Oona can also shriek like a banshee and this happens at any given moment twenty four hours a day! In their sweet little defense, they have both had bad colds. But mommy and daddy have also had bad colds and it's no fun having two screaming, snotty (literally) kids when all you want to is sleep. So, this has probably been not such a fine week for me in terms of my mothering. By Friday I wanted to dissolve into the mist of nothingness.

I've also just been down in the dumps about other things... messy house, finances, body image, too much rain, lack of time to do even the simplest things... ya, ya, ya! You can see why I haven't been posting much. So, I've decided this next week coming up I want to focus on getting healthy... in all respects. I'm going to try to post frequently about "healthy" things I want to incorporate more into my life to hopefully feel better about things in general.

Anyways, one of thing I've been trying to do everyday of late is take a walk... if there's time, I take two. Sometimes it's just me and Elsa and sometimes it's with the the entire family. Here are a few photos from a walk I took last week... starting on our porch.

I always feel like my head is clearer after a good walk. I also feel like I'm taking more control over my body. My postpartum body is strange to me. I want to accept it because it grew a beautiful baby, but it's hard. Walking... moving... staying active... makes me feel like I'll get back to a "me" that feels more comfortable.

I usually try to do a walk first thing in the morning if the babe cooperates because it's cooler out and it guarantees I at least get a little exercise that day. I hope I can keep up the momentum this week.

Happy summer!

Happy summer! My how the summer days just fly away! We've had lots of birthday parties, a solstice celebration, walks and sandbox time, a sad little garden to tend, lots of tourists visiting the store, laundry to hang on the line, and the regular hustle bustle of life with an infant and a toddler.

Oh, and my little sister gave birth last weekend to a sweet baby boy named Finnian! We're going to meet him soon... can't wait! He's Oona and Elsa's first cousin and mine and Jake's first nephew. I wanted to post a picture of him here too, but for some reason the ones I tried to save from facebook wouldn't save right. Ah well, I will take lots of pictures when I go to meet him. And definitely some group cousin pictures are in order!

There's lots more parties, birthdays, outdoor time, and summer fun on the horizon.  Can't wait for the day lilies to bloom. Maybe somewhere in all of this I'll find time for a craft or two.

Sunny Weather List

Oona drawing in her "pretty girl" hat as she calls it.

Elsa looking around in her Baba made mint jade twenties style hat.
A sweet package from my friend Karen that arrived today wrapped in vintage baby paper and containing the lovely handmade sweater dress and vintage summer outfit you see below!
Karen knit the sweater dress and it's her first handmade baby sweater. Isn't it beautiful?!
Love the paper too!

Sunny Weather List ( things that made this week beautiful despite the rain)
  • peanut brittle ice cream
  • picking wild flowers on an afternoon walk with the family on the one sunny day this week
  • beautiful packages in the mail
  • family art night
  • Oona calling herself "Oona Wildwood Flower"
  • good news from afar (more on that soon)
  • night rides that are finally getting our night owl to sleep at a reasonable time
  • finishing the "Battlestar Galactica" series with Jake (thank you, night rides)
  • finding some fun toys for upcoming birthday parties
  • strawberry season
  • ceylon tea

Family Art Night

It feels like we've had an endless amount of rain these last few weeks here in Vermont. We've been overdosing on documentaries in the evening, and we finally had enough of being plugged in to a screen. Tonight we did something we've been talking about for ages, but have been too lazy to start... family art night. Jake and I tried to just relax and have fun, not putting too much stock in what we were creating. Oona always just has fun and experiments so she doesn't need to be told to do this! I had to balance a nursing baby while doing this, but without any expectations, it went okay.

Honestly, I haven't created anything but dinner since the baby was born, and it's been far longer since I worked on a painting, so this was a nice kick starter. I hope we do this again soon (especially since I got cut short of finishing by a crying baby).

I'd also love to find some board games to play with a toddler. Anyone have any recommendations? It would be nice to do less screen watching at night and spend more time interacting.

One Month

Miss Elsa Bernadette turned one month old yesterday! My, my, she's growing so fast! I love how her little eyes become more alert everyday. She has the cutest little elf ears and the faintest little dimples. And she's so strong... she was starting to pull her head up while lying on her belly at two and a half weeks! I forgot the quiet sleepiness of little babes... no words or kisses yet. We get little glimpses of her personality in between naps and wonder... will she be like her sister, her mother, her father, this grandparent or that.. maybe a little from each.. maybe completely different... who can say as she snores away? We do know that she's captured our hearts, just as her big sister did! We also know that it's a whole new world with two Wildwood girls. I look forward to getting to know my littlest one.
